Denotation: This magazine clearly shows a photograph of an artiste Eminem looking directly at the Camera. The shot used is a medium-shot showing the subjects waist upwards. He is standing boldly and confident in the magazine with his hands are folded together. The photograph of the artiste covers the whole of the magazine to show the audience what the magazine is based upon and who is suited for. With the photograph of the artiste covers the whole of the magazine, along with the masthead “Vibe” in red and Black, including the cover lines in red and black.
Masthead: The Vibe masthead is attractive, it is eye catching because it makes the audience wants to know more on the main stories that Vibe magazines focuses on. Vibe magazine focus more on black people but this magazine clearly presents Eminem, a white hip hop artiste. The fonts used are Sans serif. All the artistes used in Vibe magazine had mostly been Hip hop or RnB artistes. With all these, it could argued that Vibe magazine are quite biased and not multi cultural. Also it has been said that the editor and chief of the Vibe magazine is of a racist.
Character: The cover photograph is one of the famous American rapper very well known as ‘Eminem’.
Composition: The image of the artiste is partly obscured because of the position. Also the pose appears to be quite intimidating.
Costume: His wearing a black vest showing the tattoos he has, this may connotes the gangsters life. The way Eminem is represented simply show the kind of people the magazine is targeted at who are mostly males who are interested in Hip hop or RnB.
NVC: His Non verbal communication is very aggressive. He’s frowning and put on a bad face impression.
Lighting: The lighting is also High key due to the fact that it is done during daytime.
Setting: The setting is just a white background which connotes innocence and purity, which gives the reader a positive view.
Cover –line: The main cover line that relates to his photograph says ‘Eminem: comes again’. This refers to the come back of Eminem with his tunes in 2009. The issue of Eminem been on Vibe magazine was quite controversial because he is a white rapper, Vibe magazine is mostly known to be a black magazine. It has also been said that the editor and chief of Vibe is somewhat of a racist; although this could only be proved to an extents. The cover line also shows that it focuses on one particular genre, Hip hop; this could also be supported with the manes shown in the cover line. All of the cover lines use a sans serif font with red and black colour connoting that it is recent. The vibe magazine is mainly based on the black hip hop artistes in American whereby the UK institutions are getting the influenced from them.
Target Audience: The target audiences are young men and teenagers aged 15-25. They would get the idea of how it feels like to be in the hood. Most of them may be from the hood and relates themselves to the music. Although Eminem is on the front cover, the cover lines stills focus on the black popular artists in America .
