 This is Hip hop magazine. The masthead is Curve' magazine. it brings female artistes together but also made mention of male artistes like Wizkhalifa, Drake and Chris Brown. Therefore this curve magazine could be targeted at both male and female.

Profiling Your Audience

The pledge magazine! Reader: Nicole is 20. She is very passionate about music and loves to get involved in hip hop music. During her spare time, she enjoys doing DJ-ing although she is in full time education (university). As a lady who knows what she wants, she see’s hip hop as something that is inspirational, inspired by various artistes Beyonce, Nicky Minaj, Alicia Keys and Keisha Cole. Her style of dressing is quite Funky and adventurous which shows that she is not scared to express her feeling in her style. Nichole has no difficulties with expressing her opinions, she is an outgoing person and when she is with her friends, all she does is talk about music or becoming a star.

I intend to develop my magazine to reach Nicole through what she is passionate about which are music she listens to, what she does during her spare time, the story that is covered on artistes that inspires her and her style of dressing. PLEGDE magazine would be inspirational for Nicole because it’s a female magazine. The front cover image would be of a woman who would be portrayed as a female role model. The cover style would be a positive image displaying a well dressed woman rather than a scanty clad female.

This is also one of my idea. Another Hip hop magazine. It represents male audience. The image used would attract my audience as it would be eye catching for the readers. Also with this magazine it would influence young male teenagers who looks up to all this rapper due to the fact that most of them are hoping to be famous just like Jay z, Drake, Eminem and Lil Wayne.

Although, this magazine focuses more on male artistes, the reason for  these are that hip-hop genre tends to be about culture which can be categorised: DJ-ing, graffiti writing and beat box. I therefore assume this magazine should be for men as it focuses on what most male audiences spent there time doing.

This is my First idea. This magazine challenges most of the hip hop lifestyles has it portrays women in a more classy, respectful and successful females in the music industry.  With this magazine, It made mention of several artistes who could be a good role model to my target audience. It would also be eye catching because of things that are included; masthead, cover -lines, Website link, Left third and Selling line.

However, it could also be targeted at male audience who sees women to in a positive view rather than the way they are usually represented in the media 'Sex objects'. Therefore with this idea, it could be targeted at either male and mostly females.

This magazine content page is for those who are most likely to be interested in music industry. The reason for this is because on the content it said ‘Music most exciting people’; this shows that there are competitions in music industry. However, with this magazine content page, it is divided into different forms of music which could be hip hop and Rock music due to the fact that it features Jay-z, Dave Grohl and Lady gaga.

With Q magazine, they tend to used Red and White. The white background used allows the reader not to be distracted and try keep them focus on the text. The masthead of this content is quite bold written in a Serif font. The way this content page is layed out is that, the main image of Jay-z is on the right side of the content page. Whereas the features of the main magazine are on the left side of the content page along with the numbers of pages (90 pages). With this layout of the content page, it could be said that they want to the audience to focus on certain things that are interested in; therefore it may be targeted at any age range who are in interested to know more about Hip hop and Rock music.

The people mentioned in this magazine are Jay-z, Dave Grohl, Lady gaga and Brandon child. The images used at the bottom of the magazine content page are that of the rock musicians which are also mentioned in the feature letting the audience know what they have learned so far in the music industry. Whereas Jay-z talks about his relationship with other musicians and challenges that he faced.

Although this magazine could be targeted at either male or female because of the people that are featured, the age range could be between 15- 30 and could be eye catching or appealing to either white or black people.

Music Magazine Content page 1

This magazine content page is simply for those who are interested in listening to rock music and for those who are like drumming. With the contents page, the colour used is Red/white and black/white which makes the colour contrasting. Also this magazine is splitted into two main parts; the features were it consists of what the reader would want to read about especially on a very important issue or topic (regular). Another feature contains what the reader wants to read about.

The numbers of pages used in this content page is 60, along with the kicker and the explanatory. The people that are mentioned in this magazine are rock musicians which are Dave Lombardo, McQueen, Paul Garred and Owen n Hopkins.  The layout of this contents magazine is L shape because the features is on the left, the main images at the centre of the page and at the bottom contains images moving towards the right.

The images used are linked to the Masthead along with the small images. With the people that were photographed in this contents page, depending on the age, ethnicity and gender. The target audience for this magazine are both female and male both mostly male. The reason why this is targeted at female audience is because it made mention of glamorous rocking McQueen. However, in terms of the ethnicity is mostly for white people.

Drummer magazine is a rock element magazine which is eye catching for the audience that it is suited for. The main features for this magazine content page is the title, contents, captions, eye catching colours, pictures and page numbers 

MAGAZINE FRONT COVER 2

Masthead: Magazine name is Q magazine. It is displayed on the left side of the magazine. This is the visual branding of the title and is often done in a specifically designed typeface to be unique. It is usually used on the contents page inside as well as the front cover and as a logo for advertising and branding purposes.

Dateline: the dateline used in this magazine often shows when it’s published. The price is shown along with the number pages.

Main image: The main image of this magazine is that Of Jay-z. The camera shot used is medium close up; a shot from shoulder to the top. The image covers the front magazine. The face is big and bold; it stands out clearly, with the rapper looking directly at the camera.

Cover-lines: With Q magazine, it covers different story which are distributed around the main image. With the cover- lines, the names mentioned are written in Red, along with other stories that are covered in this magazine which are black and white.

Main Cover-line: The main cover line is very bold and clear. The name of the rapper is written in a sans serif font. With Q magazine, it tends to focus on recent information about the celebrities. With the main cover line, it is positioned at the top left of the magazine.

Left third: The left third of the magazine is vital, so that the title can be recognized by the audience. The cover lines are also bold to show important the stories are.

Barcode: This is used by retailers. It is at the bottom right of the magazine.

Selling line: The selling is attracted by the readership. It attracts the audience saying ‘the 10 most exciting people in the music’. It shows the editorial philosophy.

Website Link: All magazine released should state the companies/publishers website. 

MAGAZINE FRONT COVER

Masthead: Magazine name is called ‘Play’. The font used is a serif font; bold and along with a purple colour with white outlines. This masthead is quite appealing to whom the readership are.

Dateline: the selling price is at the top left along with the dates showing when it was published.

Main image: The image used is that of famous successful singer and actress Beyonce. This image takes up the front page. The image is bright and sharp. She’s is looking directly at the camera with hands crossed on her chest.

Main Cover-line: The main cover line is on the left side of the magazine that covers the story of the singer. Her name is written in Red and the rest of the cover line in white. With play magazine, it promotes the artiste whilst she was with her group (destiny child) featured in play magazine. The main cover line stands out amongst the other cover lines because it is clear and bold compare to the other cover lines.

Left third: This magazine covers other things that may attract the audience although it is not shown in a full-frontage. With the short cover lines, it shows how important it is to the reader.

Barcode: Standard bar code used by retailers. It is at the bottom of the left of the magazine.

Music Magazine textual analysis 3

Denotation: This magazine cover consists of two colour Blue and black. This photograph of Taylor Swift shows that she is looking directly at the camera; she poses in a nice way, so that the readers would admire her looks. The camera shot used is a Medium shot; meaning a shot from the waists upwards. The way she dresses also matches with the colours used in the magazine which makes it very simple. Another point could be that of the background, a plain white colour used to connotes peace and pure along with the image that covers the whole of the magazine. The masthead is placed behind the photograph which starts on the left. Her name is written in black along with the cover lines in blue. Barcode is also included. This photographed of Taylor swift is used to show how important she is probably the way she is represented in media and how successful she had become. Therefore, audience might have a sense of impression that she is a young role model who may inspire other youths.

Masthead: To describe this masthead, it is the ultimate guide of music, meaning Blender magazine cannot be underestimated, and whatever it says on the cover line is what would be inside the magazine itself. With this masthead, it is just a blue colour with no outlines and in a Sans serif font written in capital letters. Blender magazine came about in 1994; this clearly shows that it is recent. It is an American music magazine, it focuses on artistes, music and brands. Blender magazine is quite popular in America, because not only those it cover the good songs always, it talks about things in general rather than focus on just certain people that must read the magazine. Therefore one could assume with the colour of the masthead and the sans serif used is quite attracted, because it is bold and clear and stands out properly.

Character: The photograph is of a young talented, multi warded singer and songwriter ‘Taylor Swift’. She dressed in a simple outfit with her black waist coat and white silky top along with a black pant.

Composition: She is dressed in a very simple way; she looks confident and ready to be on that blender magazine. Her body language is admirable.

Costume:  Her clothing is a black waist coat along with a white top and black pant. This costume is not extreme; it’s a simple style which would appeal to certain target audience of the magazine who are most likely to be female.

NVC: Her Non verbal communication is decent for a famous artistes compare to the ways other artistes might be represented in other magazine.

Lighting:  The lighting used for this magazine is High key. The photograph is mainly light tone, which goes with the background.  

Setting: The background is white connotes pure, good and inspiration.

Cover lines: The main cover line is that of ‘Taylor swift: meet the boyfriend trashing radio-ruling’. This is making reference in her blender interview along with a piece of her music she did before ‘you belong with me’ when she over heard her male friend speaking to his girlfriend in a quiet and defensive way in April 2008.In this video, she felt sympathy for her friend as tried to convince his girlfriend to make her understand.  With this music is a pop element, it won a kids choice awards and was nominated for the song of the year at the 45^th Academy of country music awards. It always also debuted at number twelve on the billboard Hot 100, which shows that as a young teenager, she is very successful with her music. There are different cover lines which could suggest that the magazine covers different stories. The artistes that were mentioned are Taylor swift, Michael Jackson and Gnarls Barkley. With this magazine it is targeted at young people, they might see Taylor Swift has a role model.

Target Audience: Although there are several points made about this magazine, the likely target audience would be people (male and female aged 14-20). This magazine may be interesting to them to see how a young teenager could be good role models to the others.

Music magazine textual analysis 2

Denotation: This magazine clearly shows a photograph of an artiste Eminem looking directly at the Camera. The shot used is a medium-shot showing the subjects waist upwards. He is standing boldly and confident in the magazine with his hands are folded together. The photograph of the artiste covers the whole of the magazine to show the audience what the magazine is based upon and who is suited for.  With the photograph of the artiste covers the whole of the magazine, along with the masthead “Vibe” in red and Black, including the cover lines in red and black.

Masthead: The Vibe masthead is attractive, it is eye catching because it makes the audience wants to know more on the main stories that Vibe magazines focuses on. Vibe magazine focus more on black people but this magazine clearly presents Eminem, a white hip hop artiste. The fonts used are Sans serif. All the artistes used in Vibe magazine had mostly been Hip hop or RnB artistes. With all these, it could argued that Vibe magazine are quite biased and not multi cultural. Also it has been said that the editor and chief of the Vibe magazine is of a racist.

Character: The cover photograph is one of the famous American rapper very well known as ‘Eminem’.

Composition: The image of the artiste is partly obscured because of the position. Also the pose appears to be quite intimidating.

Costume:  His wearing a black vest showing the tattoos he has, this may connotes the gangsters life. The way Eminem is represented simply show the kind of people the magazine is targeted at who are mostly males who are interested in Hip hop or RnB.

NVC: His Non verbal communication is very aggressive. He’s frowning and put on a bad face impression.

Lighting: The lighting is also High key due to the fact that it is done during daytime.

Setting:  The setting is just a white background which connotes innocence and purity, which gives the reader a positive view.

Cover –line: The main cover line that relates to his photograph says ‘Eminem: comes again’. This refers to the come back of Eminem with his tunes in 2009. The issue of Eminem been on Vibe magazine was quite controversial because he is a white rapper, Vibe magazine is mostly known to be a black magazine. It has also been said that the editor and chief of Vibe is somewhat of a racist; although this could only be proved to an extents. The cover line also shows that it focuses on one particular genre, Hip hop; this could also be supported with the manes shown in the cover line. All of the cover lines use a sans serif font with red and black colour connoting that it is recent. The vibe magazine is mainly based on the black hip hop artistes in American whereby the UK institutions are getting the influenced from them.

Target Audience: The target audiences are young men and teenagers aged 15-25. They would get the idea of how it feels like to be in the hood. Most of them may be from the hood and relates themselves to the music. Although Eminem is on the front cover, the cover lines stills focus on the black popular artists in America.

Music magzine textual analysis 1

Denotation: The photographed woman’s name is in Red and Gold outline. The magazine cover consists of a colour photograph of a woman posing for the camera. The shots used is a medium shot that is framed waist up, therefore it is used to reveal the conceal often used to shot artistes. It seems like she is kneeling down on something that is invisible. The colour of the background is sky blue along with the fact that it is photographed on the beach. The woman photograph is placed in the centre of the magazine; behind the woman is the masthead ‘Vibe’ consists of different cover lines in black and Gold. A bar code is also visible at the bottom of the left corner of the magazine.  

 Masthead: Vibe masthead is an urban magazine: The font used is a sans serif font along with words that are joined together which is gold yellow to stand out more and attract the audience. With Vibe magazine it focuses on culture, Hip hop genres and lifestyles. All the artistes whose image had been put up as had stories to share. The masthead could also shows who the readers are and why it is targeted at those audiences. With Vibe magazine there have been several artistes involved which are Snoop dog, 50Cents, T.I etc. Therefore Vive magazine relates more to young adults starting there life in Hip hop music or ways to they could get connections with others.

Character: The cover character is one of the most talented American Singer Mariah Carey. She is represented on Vibe magazine to advertise her costumes and show off how she maintained her body even though she is wedded.

Composition: she is represented to be the sexiest singer. Her body language, pose and clothing are very seductive. Also the way she dresses may either attract either female or male audience.

Costume: she dressed as if she is on the beach in her black bikini, showing of her body. This way of dressing would appeal to the target audience who are most likely to be male and also female.

NVC: Her Non verbal communication is also very appealing and seductive. She is almost looking straight at the camera; her hair is packed around to one side to show off some parts of her body

Lighting: The lighting is High key, as the lighting is meant to display during day time.

Setting:  The setting is quite obvious, the sky blue background connotes the sea and her costumes also links to the fact that she could be on the beach.

Cover lines: The main cover line that relates her photograph says “Mariah Carey”: Hits the beach in Heels as one night stand with the sexiest singer alive” released in June 2008. In her bikini, she’s got a summer fantastic time going on. It is said that the reason why Mariah Carey appeared in the front magazine is linked to her Bye –Bye video, when she just got married to her soul mate Nick cannon. The name of the artiste is written in Serif and other cover-lines are written Sans Serif connoting that the information are more recent and modern. Sans serif font is used to help carry along the theme of the article and to make the draw the attention of the audience. Also it is said that Mariah Carey is newlywed to Nick cannon in 2008 shows of her new body. With the cover lines, it is both on the left and right side. The cover line on the left is showing off tips on how celebrities dresses and the cover lines on the right simply shows

Target Audience: Looking at all these points, the target audience could either be both male and female, between the ages of 18-30.  They are more likely to be interested in different lifestyles, R&B and Hip hop. Therefore the language on the magazine might be colloquial to relate to the audience.  With this magazine, the cover lines could also show the kind of people that would read this magazine because of the way its layed out. With this magazine, it can be read by either educated people but it could be argued that it is mainly targeted at working class people.
